Canto 16
By Aria D.
Summary:
Dante and Virgil are in a new
place where he can hear the noise of cataract falling into the next circle.
Then there is three shades shout and come toward them. The three shades are
burn badly by the flames and Virgil tells Dante to be polite to these guys who
said they were from the same city as Dante. However, Dante is annoyed by these
three shades as he thought they were only some random people in the hell. The
three shades wheel and try to talk to them. To Dante’s surprise,
all of the three shades were very famous when they alive. They were Guido
Guerra(the grandson of the good Gualdrada), Tegghiaio Aldobrandi and Iacopo
Rusticucci, who were all brave and smart(they are all famous Guelph nobles and
party leaders from just before Dante's time). After knowing whom the shades are,
Dante changes his attitude and express his sorry for seeing them in the hell.
Then the three shades ask Dante whether courtesy and valor still in their city,
or they are just disappeared. Dante responds them that Florence is replaced by arrogance and excess. The
three shades then leave directly without saying bye to them. Dante and Virgil
then walk forward and see a waterfall. Virgil gird Dante by using a cord and
then Virgil throw the cord into the pit. Dante is confused by what Virgil is
doing. However, to Dante’s surprise, he sees a scary figure comes swimming
upward who is called Geryon. (He is the symbol of the Fraudulent and the
Malicious)
