inferno canto 31


Canto 31 By Aria D.
Summary:
 Virgil blames Dante but cures him at the same time. As they moving forward, they find out it is neither day nor night in the valley. Therefore, Dante can’t see things clear  in the forward.He hears some shounds of horn instead. That sounds are so loud that even louder than thunders. Dante starts to look at the place where the sounds come from. It seems like there are lots of high towers in a city in front of them. Dante asks Virgil what city is that. In case of frightening Dante, Virgil respones him that is not a city; they are actually the giants and they are in the pit around its rim. After the mist getting thiner. Dante can see the gaints more clear. He is terrified. "Raphael mai amech izabi almi," The gaint starts shouting and its voice is scrannel. Virgil yell and curse at it after he sees it. The giant’s name is Nimrod and it is the one who makes the world no longer speaks one language. Dante and Virgil keep on going forward and see another gaint who is wrapped by chains. His name is Ephialtes and he thought he is strong enough to defeat Jove. Virgil tells Dante they will see a gaint named Antaeus soon, who speaks and is unbound. The gaint will lead them to the bottom of the hell. Dante feels terrified when he heard they would meet more gaints in the bottom of the hell.  Dante and Virgil keep on going and meet Antaeus. He is pretty high. Virgil asks if Antaeus could send them down to Cocytus. Antaeus agrees but Dante is afraid of touching it. Virgil then hold Dante’s hand and they go down to the deeper area in the hell.
Sins
There is not a particular sin in this canto. However, the sin of giant Ephialtes is that he thinks he can defeat Jove. Most of the giants tried to defy God or challenge the mythic gods and so they must stay in Hell.
Punishment:
The punishment of the giants is that they are wrapped by chains in the hell.

Contrapasso:
Since there is not a particular sin in this canto, there is not a contrapasso either in this canto.

Nimrod
He is the first giant Dante and Virgil see.
Ephialtes
one of the giants imprisoned in the circle of Treachery. He believes he can defeat Jove.
Antaeus
a half-giant, the son of Poseidon and Gaia, whose wife was goddess Tinge. He leads Dante and Virgil to the bottom of the hell
